Chernomoretz to receive Townshipstatus
The Black Sea village of Chernomorets, near Sozopol, is set to assume the status of a town. The decision was taken on December 2 2009 by the Bulgarian Cabinet, Dnevnik daily reported.
The request of promotion in status was tabled by the village authorities, while the concept was upheld and supported by Sozopol municipality and the regional head of Bourgas. The village of Chernomorets was granted a "summer resort status" in 1963 during Bulgaria's communist regime. With the passage of time, the village had seen changes, growth and development and local authorities claim that as of September 2009, its permanent residents amount to 2100, or twice the number required for a village to be recognised as a town.
Chernomorets mayor Dobri Dobrev launched the campaign of recognition in March 2009. At the time he said that his motives were that "with the village's current status, any further development is thwarted. We strive to attract further investment; we want banks, mobile operators and other companies to open their offices here", Dnevnik daily quoted him as saying.
Moreover, a petition is being signed by the locals in Chernomorets for it to be renamed St Nikola once it receives township status. The referendum for the name change was requested by the local residents themselves, who want to have it renamed after St Nikola whose "unique icon" is in display at the village church bearing his name.
